Egg donation is an attractive and viable solution for many struggling infertiles. The egg donor processes are easy if well managed by professional egg donor agents.

Woman are born with a set amount of eggs and these are destroyed and depleted during life. Eggs cannot be regenerated or produced. Chemicals and lifestyles adversely affect egg quality as well as unknown forces, so when a person decides to conceive, it may already be too late for known or unknown reasons. The beauty of an egg donor donating eggs or the gift of life is that it does not reduce her own fertility. The number of eggs retrieved are so minimal in comparison to the eggs that she has. It is a process of her really giving the eggs that would have been lost in such a cycle in any event.

The dilema of the modern world is that people are delaying having a family until their careers and finances are more established, thus being in a more stable and secure position to provide for dependents. The challenge with this is that fertility for woman starts to decline and very often even woman in their 30’s are struffling to produce good quality eggs.

The answer to the plight for such woman, as well as those suffering from premature ovarian failure (POF), premature menopause, those with poor quality eggs, woman carrying genetic diseases and of course male homosexuals or single men include egg donor processes. Woman over the age of 40 are generally guided to consider donor eggs to reduce the risk of poor quality eggs and to significantly lower the risk of deformaties. As every individual is different, so the fertility aspect per inidvidual is also different. One particular egg donation recipient was in her 20’s and selected an egg donor aged early 30’s. It was just meant to be as the result was a quick positive, so the lady in her 20’s suffered from poor egg quality or an absent egg reserve, whilst the 30 some thing year old still had an adequate supply of good quality eggs.

Egg donors are young healthy woman aged between 18 and 34 who want to give the gift of life and who feel that their eggs are literally being flushed away every month. South Africa is a special county filled with people who want to help. There is no cost involved for egg donors and no further responsibility or liability. Egg donation is a safe process facilitated by professionals who are experienced in egg donor processes. Egg donation does not negatively impact the donor’s own fertility.

The anonymity and confidentialit aspect of egg donation in South Africa is also encouraged as it provides a level of protection for both recipients and egg donors and empowers parties to help if they are moved and also to conceive in a private manner.

Egg donation recipients are afforded access to an extensive egg donor database where they can select the right profiles suited to their requirements for an egg donor. Whilst the majority of people look for physical matches, it may be that recipients of donor eggs look for other traits that resemble them - this may be interests, skills, beliefs, etc.

Upon an egg donation recipient confirming the preferred egg donor profile(s), the egg donor’s commitment is obtained for such an egg donor program.

The egg donor is then required to undergo necessary screening, which includes psychological and medical assessments. The latter includes hormonal and infection tests as well as an internal scan confirming that the ovarian function is good. Whilst this is happening the recipient’s body is screened to confirm its suitability to carry a pregnancy - i.e. a viable and healthy uterus. Then the cycle sycnhronisation process happens. Usually one or both parties (egg donor and egg donation recipient) are put on the pill to manage and influence the cycles. The contraceptive pill is used to bring on or delay a cycle and thus align the menstrual cycles for both parties. Provided timing is convenient for both, when the egg donor’s cycle starts, the egg donor treatment can commence. She takes intramuscular injections to stimulate egg development. During a two week period, she is medically assessed and supported to check her egg follicle development. Depending on her body’s individual response to the medication, hormonal doses may be upped or lowered to accommodate her body. Simultansouely, the egg donation recipient is prepared for pregnancy. Her uterine lining is stimulated to grow to a particular point. Emrbyos like to burry into a well developed uterus.

On the day of ovulation, the eggs are retrieved vaginally directly from the ovaries. Egg donors are either put under aneasthetic or sedation during the retrieval process. The number and quality of eggs retrieved varies per inidvidual and per cycle. This is the end of the egg donation commitment for the egg donor and she has neither further responsiblities nor rights.

The donated eggs are then put together with the sperm in a medium that closely mimics the body’s. The development of the embryos is under professional supervision in a specialised laboratory. Not all eggs will proceed to be fertilised and not all fertilised eggs will develop further into embryos, but again every situation is entirely unique. It may be that all eggs are fertilised and proceed to become babies. After three or five days, usually two embryos are transferred into the well prepared uterus.

Recipients take a pregnancy test 12 days after embryo transfer. The waiting time or 2WW (two week wait) is an extremely anxious and stressful time as recipients are eagerly watching their body for any sign of pregnancy. Because of the hormonal intake to prepared the body for pregnancy, recipients are cautioned not to pay too much attention to signs that may indicate pregnancy as they may be hormonal at this stage

Egg donation is a miraculous and available process for people who have no other options at this point. For egg donors, it is also a gracious and giving deed and many egg donors feel it gives them a purpose and adds significant value to make such a meaningful difference to others who are so reliant on them for this precious gift.

Recipients of donor eggs are people of all cultures and race groups, so there is always a need for different people to come forward who may be interested in egg donor processes to come forward. More information on www.baby2mom.co.za

The increasing need for egg donation has resulted in a greater awareness around this sensitive topic and a more caring and accepting feeling has emanated for South African egg donations.

Once a person is at the stage of their lives where they need to consider egg donation, it is after an emotional and spiritual process of soul searching and acceptance of the situation that donor eggs will be used. The time and process for recipients to be accepting of this differs per individual, ranging from immediate acceptance to several months for others.

South African egg donations is a wonderful program offering a solution to previously infertile woman through the healthy and viable eggs from their egg donors. One of the greatest beauties of these programs is that it saves people’s well beings - by restoring hope, mends hearts and creates families. So many people have moved from a state of absolute depression to elation because they have been able to conceive with donor eggs.

The increasing infertility rate in South Africa is resulting in egg donation becoming a more popular aspect for those inflected with premature ovarian failure (POF), menopause, premature menopause, eggs predisposed to genetic abnormalities and an absence of own healthy eggs. These circumstances and other aspects of diminished ovarian reserve can be quite traumatic to contend with and impact on the numbers in the general population. So, without donor eggs, these people actually have no chance of conceiving.

For egg donation recipients, a further advantage is the empowerment afforded in South Africa. The ability to select an appropriately profiled egg donor who resembles the recipients in whatever traits are significant to them, enables them to find the perfect egg donor. These can be physical, academic, social, philosophical, etc or the right combination of varying traits. Because of the anonymity of egg donation in South Africa, the two parties - egg donors and recipients - will not have one another’s contact details, so the confidentiality is completely protected. If recipients elect not to disclose the details of the child’s conception, this is their prerogative and a very personalised and individual decision. Some recipients of donor eggs prefer to be totally honest and give all non-confidential details about the egg donor, the amazing lady who contributed to this miracle child’s being. They want to be in a position to give their chid the medical background, the extended ancestral details, etc., so that the child is informed about his/ her full genetic background.
Others prefer to be very private about the matter and only discuss this with their partner. Their thinking is motivated by the fact that life poses enough of its own challenges and provision of this information may create confusion and unsettled feelings for their child(ren) about their origin. So the egg donation can remain an intimate deed.
The absence of an egg donor registry in South Africa supports the full anonymity of egg donor programs.

Without the precious help of the amazingly beautiful South African woman who come forward to assist as egg donors, such hope of having a miracle pregnancy would not be possible for hundreds and thousands of people. This fantastic gesture has also resulted in egg donation recipients coming from all over the world to visit South Africa, to really become pregnant through donor eggs!
